Kumaun University was founded in 1973 and has three campuses: one each in Almora, Nainital, and Bhimtal; five affiliated government colleges; and about the same number of affiliated private institutions that are self-financed and dispersed around the Kumaun region. For the purpose of providing academic, medical, and vocational education, a second university campus is being constructed at Bhimtal.
